“Creating more functional, more peaceful individuals for a more functional, more peaceful world”

Kali

This is primarily a drill-based Filipino weaponry class, but with elements of ‘empty-hand’ application.

Through the curriculum of our parent school in the US, our Kali class delivers 2 inter-related ‘arts’; Kali – weapon-based – and Panantukan (pannan-too-can) – empty hand. However, we use Kali as an umbrella term to cover both arts, but also to distinguish and coincide with similar terms, such as Arnis and Escrima.

Through the guidance of our school’s founder – Guro Rick Faye – we believe the use of tools such as the stick and training knife offer a great way to fine tune motor skills, increase peripheral vision, and generally provide you with more options to defend against an attack with a weapon. Moreover, training with weapons can support your development in other martial arts – to identify range, acquire better limb coordination, and enhance sensitivity.

What to expect

Learn to use weapons such as the stick, dagger, staff and palm stick, and the ranges that they are best utilised. Develop upper and lower body co-ordination and dexterity, with functional footwork.

Cultivate greater cognitive skills, and functionalise empty hand applications by translating the movement from your experience with weaponry. By manipulating the body of your opponent and exploring the concept of limb destruction, you will become more sensitive to the would-be attacker, and learn effective self-defence attributes as a result.

Class Times

Tues & Thurs: 7-8pm

What you should bring

Equipment is provided, but we recommend you buy your own sticks (ours get battered!) and gloves after the first few weeks. Sticks can be purchased through the school – but regular escrima rattan sticks are fine (approx. 26”, or thereabouts). For empty-hand sessions, fingerless (MMA-style) gloves are more versatile, as they allow for greater manipulation of your partner – although ‘bag gloves’ are still suitable.
